Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help me find a rabbi to ___________? The Board of Rabbis of Southern California does not maintain a list of rabbis-for-hire to officiate at marriages, bar/bat mitzvahs, brit milah or other ritual events. We also do not have a roster of rabbis available or "on call" for ordinary rabbinical or chaplaincy services.
If you need a rabbi for a funeral, contact the mortuary that is taking care of your funeral arrangements. Most will have a list of available rabbis.
Patients in hospitals or health centers who are in critical or end-of-life situations are eligible for our Emergency Chaplaincy Services. More information is available on that page.
For all other rabbinical services, we encourage members of the Jewish community to join a temple or synagogue that fits their lifestyle and religious practice. Contact the parent body of the specific denomination--Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist or Reform--you are interested in for more information. Links to the websites for those offices can be found on our Links page.
What is the Board of Rabbis? The Board of Rabbis of Southern California is a transdenominational voluntary membership organization offering professional development for its 290 member rabbis. The Board also promotes and enriches Jewish learning and living through numerous community programs.
Who can join the Board of Rabbis? Membership is available to any ordained rabbi located in southern California between San Luis Obispo and San Diego who is also a current member-in-good-standing of either the Central Conference of American Rabbis (Reform), the Rabbinical Assembly (Conservative), the Rabbinical Council of America (Orthodox), or the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (Reconstructionist).
I am interested in learning more about, or in converting to, Judaism. The regional synagogue movement offices, listed here, can help those who are interested in conversion or introductory classes in Judaism. In addition, local synagogues and temples often offer adult courses and outreach classes open to non-members.
