The Board of Rabbis actively engages in gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness) by supporting, developing or administering programs such as the following:
  • Chaplains from the Board of Rabbis visit the sick (bikkur holim), provide spiritual counseling and crisis intervention to individuals and their families, and conduct classes and services for Shabbat and Jewish holidays, at hospitals, medical centers, nursing and convalescent homes, jails and other penal facilities.

  • Our Chaplaincy Commission is responsible for providing ecclesiastical endorsement for candidates for positions as Jewish chaplains in California state prisons, as well as mental health and developmental services institutions. Commission members also assist state official in implementing the mandated Jewish Kosher Meal Plan in California State Prisons.

  • Emergency Chaplaincy Services to unaffiliated Jews facing life-threatening crises in local hospitals and medical centers, with plans for eventual expanded coverage to nursing homes, hospice, and other facilities caring for seriously ill and dying patients.

  • Offers its members experiencing times of personal crisis confidential consultation with rabbinic colleagues who also hold professional credentials in the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, and social work.

  • The Funeral Practices Committee, consisting of member rabbis and executives from Jewish Mortuaries and Funeral Homes, works to maintain uniformly high standards for Jewish burial rituals and aftercare.
